It's safe to say all riding lawn mowers more or less do a decent job of cutting the grass. So there are other points to remember if you're in the market riding garden tractors.

First and foremost when it comes to new or used riding lawn mowers is creature comforts. Well the one creature comfort that counts. The seat. Make sure you get one that fits your butt. Kinda blunt but I've got no other way to put it.

How much acreage you mowing? If it's an acre or less and relatively level you may find any of the riding lawn mowers at Lowes or Home Depot to be up to the job. Expect to pay between $1500 to $2500 for a new model depending on the bells and whistles you insist on.

That said, while you can buy from one of the Big Box stores you may be surprised to find that for a few bucks more you can find a somewhat more durable one at an independent dealer who also services what they sell. Which would be a big selling point or not. Such a dealer also has an inventory of parts available in the back room.

While you don't want to get carried away some recommend buying a bit more machine than you think you'll need.

Other insist on buying new. But if you buy used remember age counts but hours on the engine counts for moe.

Is your yard level? If not you'll want to use a walk behind for slopes and trimming next to stuff like flower beds, trees and hedges.

Speaking of which if you've got a lot of flower beds, trees and hedges to cut around, zero turn mowers might be your best bet. If you can afford it, you'll find the time spent trimming the grass will be trimmed quite a bit by one of the popular ZTR riding lawn mowers on the market.
