Zero turn radius riding lawn mowers do save you time since you're almost always cutting grass rather than positioning your lawn tractor to be able to cut grass. In most cases, you can expect to just about cut the time it takes to cut your lawn in half.
They're great if you've got a yard full of shrubs, flower beds, poles, trees and other landscaping to cut around. Maneuverability being their strong suit.
And since they do such a good job of cutting around obstacles they eliminate the need for a trimming mower.
They work best on flat real estate. Lacking the traction of your typical riding garden tractors zero turn radius riding lawn mowers are not the ideal solution for mowing hills.
Lacking a steering wheel ZTR mowers aren't as easy to learn to drive. They use a lever to control each rear wheel. Each also controls forward and reverse. It takes some getting used to but once you get the hang of it, you won't miss a steering wheel.
Even though zero turn radius riding lawn mowers are fast becoming the mower of choice all this doesn't come cheap. Which may be their biggest drawback. Unless you go used, you're looking at around $3000 to get into the ZTR mower game.
