Simple Lawn Care and Maintenance

Keeping your grass green requires sufficient time for lawn care and maintenance. Although grasses may naturally take care of themselves, you may need to provide them with the optimum condition to grow. Still you can get that with less work and for less money if you heed advice like what follows.

The Right Grass Variety
One of the best bits of summer lawn care advice is to choose a variety that best suits the climate in your area. Different species do well in different conditions. Bermuda grass is best grown in summer while Rye grass can hold it's own in winter.

Aeration
Grass will always grow healthy on good soil. Improve your soil quality by aerating the soil at least once a year. This will allow oxygen to seep into the ground and prevent soil compaction. As a result, grass roots will have ample space to grow. Aerating the soil will also help protect your lawn especially during winter.

Irrigation
Aside from air, another essential element in lawn care and maintenance is water. When you water your lawn, soak the soil deeply, but not too often. The best thing to do is to set a watering program for your lawn. This depends on several factors including temperature, rain, humidity, type of turf, soil, climate, and wind velocity. Watering twice a day is recommended during summer months. However, adjust the frequency when there is rain runoff since too much water will cause weed growth and influx of disease.

Mow Your Lawn
Mowing your lawn is one of the most essential elements in lawn care and maintenance. Mowing should be done at an appropriate manner at the appropriate time. Mowing the grass too short in early spring is not a good idea. Oh! And don't forget about your lawn mower too! Have you got it all prepped up for the big day? Be sure to do a check up before using it. Have the blades sharpened in time for mowing. Also, check on the mower parts. Make sure they are all in good condition.

Leave the Clippings
Why bag it? Your lawn is better off if you leave the clippings to decompose and add nutrients to the soil. In other words it's free fertilizer.

Now you should be able to enjoy green, crisply cut, well tended grass!
