Spring Lawn Care: How Do You Take Care of Your Lawn in Spring?
Spring is always going to be a very busy season for lawn care. That is if you want to take in the sight of greener and healthier grass in the following months! To that end, here are some do's and don'ts for a successful spring lawn care.
Things On Your To-Do List
Rake your lawn to remove any built up thatch (real or imagined), wet leaves, and other debris left over from winter. People have this common perception that raking should only be done in the fall. Sure it's done to get rid of leaves. But raking during spring also helps get rid of thatches accumulated last winter. So rake deeply!
Do the first cut. Mow your lawn but not too short. About an inch of grass is sufficient enough.
If you see any weeds, then it's time for treatment and weed control. April is the best month for doing this. First, you need to determine what kinds of weeds are growing. Weeds love to grow on compacted soil so check for soil compaction signaled by the presence of moss plants. Other conducive areas for weed growth are wet spots and heavily-used areas. They also love to grow in areas which have been mowed too closely during their dormant season as well as those where soil is not properly fertilized.
Get out the spreader and do a lime application. Why? Grass grows best in neutral soil.
Fertilize your soil in moderation. Over fertilizing will only lead to weed growth and disease.
Things to Avoid
Do not mow your lawn too short. This may keep the soil exposed and you wouldn't want to invite weeds in, would you?
Do not fertilize cool-season grasses in early spring. Instead, fertilize them in late fall.
Do not apply lime when not necessary. It is best to test soil acidity by sending it your county extension.
As soon as the lawn is dry enough then you can now head outside to do some spring lawn care and maintenance.
